Wireless Industry News
November 11, 2013 – Cisco Systems, a provider of IT services, and Wilocity have announced a partnership intending to use tri-band Wi-Fi with data rates up to 5 Gbps to offer customers increased network speed and capacity.
60 GHz wireless ability key
Wilocity’s tri-band Wi-Fi offerings combine the multi-gigabit ability of 802.11ad utilizing the 60 GHz spectrum band. They also include 802.11a/n/ac in the 5GHz range and 802.11b/g/n in the 2.4 GHz range. The 802.11ad specification evades the decrease in wireless network ability when there are a lot of users trying to access the service, but doesn’t transmit through solid objects. The tri-band ability of this offering will routinely change from 60 GHz to the best solution, whenever the 802.11ad connection is lost.
In the words of Bob Friday, CTO of Cisco Systems Enterprise Networking Group, “We see enormous potential and demand for increased wireless capacity and performance in the enterprise, and Wilocity’s expertise in 60 GHz is a key component to satisfying that demand.”
“Tri-band Wi-Fi from Wilocity provides much needed network capacity and speed in the enterprise as it supports data rates far faster than other current wireless standards, opening the way to new use cases and applications.”
“We really see this as being the next major step forward after dot-eleven ac”
The next generation in wireless technology, the 802.11ad specification has been accepted by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and is currently included in the Wi-Fi Alliance ranks. This heralds the beginning of a new age in wireless ability, with speeds up to 10 times faster than current Wi-Fi technology.
